The reverse osmosis flow restrictor: what it does and when to change it

A reverse osmosis flow restrictor is a small fitting on the drain line that limits how fast reject water can escape. By throttling that stream it holds pressure against the membrane, which is what makes filtration happen at all. Why the drain line needs a throttle

Without a restrictor the concentrate stream runs freely, pressure across the membrane collapses and almost nothing is pushed through to the product side. The restrictor forces the incoming pressure to act on the membrane surface instead. At the same time the water still leaving keeps the membrane face swept clean, carrying away the salts that reverse osmosis has just concentrated there.

It is matched to the membrane, not chosen freely

Restrictors are rated for a drain flow that suits a particular membrane production rate, and the two are supposed to be a pair. Fit one that lets too much water past and production falls and the drain runs constantly. Fit one that is too tight and the membrane surface is not swept properly, so scale and fouling build up on it and the unit loses output permanently. When you replace a membrane with a different rating, check whether the restrictor should change too.

Capillary, cartridge and valve types

The common inline capillary type is a small tube crimped into the drain line, usually marked with its rating and with an arrow for flow direction. Cartridge types drop into a housing or into the elbow at the membrane cap. Some systems use an adjustable needle valve instead, which is convenient on a bench but easy to leave in the wrong position after a service. A restrictor blocked by scale or debris looks like a dead system: the tank never fills and the drain line stays dry.
