How reverse osmosis tank pressure changes what the system does

Tank pressure is usually discussed as a maintenance setting, and it is also a variable that shapes how the whole system behaves while it runs. As the tank fills, its internal pressure rises and pushes back against the membrane, which changes production rate, water quality and the proportion sent to drain, all in the same direction and all for the worse.

Back pressure and net driving pressure

Production depends on the difference between the pressure pushing water at the membrane and the pressure resisting it on the product side. An empty tank resists very little, so the system produces quickly. As the tank fills, its air charge is compressed and resistance climbs, so the effective driving pressure falls and production slows. By the time the tank is nearly full, the system is working against most of what the supply provides, which is why the last part of a fill takes disproportionately long.

What that does to quality and to drain flow

Lower driving pressure means the membrane rejects less well, so the water made late in a fill is measurably poorer than the water made early. Meanwhile the drain flow continues at a rate set by the flow restrictor, so as production slows the proportion of feed water going to drain rises. Both effects are inherent to a tank fed system and both are worst in the same conditions: low incoming pressure, a cold feed, or a tank charged too high.

What a permeate pump changes

A permeate pump uses the energy of the reject stream, which would otherwise go to drain unused, to push product into the tank. That removes most of the back pressure the membrane sees, so the system produces at close to its best rate for the whole fill rather than tailing off. The consequences are a faster fill, better average water quality, and a lower proportion sent to drain. It needs no electricity, and it is usually the most effective single upgrade to an existing system.

Setting the tank charge correctly matters, since a charge that is too high raises the back pressure from the start. Raising incoming pressure with a booster pump helps directly where the supply is weak.
