Reverse osmosis tank not filling: finding the fault

When a reverse osmosis faucet gives a short burst and then a trickle, the storage tank is not filling as it should. The cause is nearly always one of four things: a valve left shut, feed pressure that is too low, a clogged membrane or pre-filter, or a tank that has lost its air charge. Work through them in cost order and you will find it without replacing parts you did not need.

Start with the checks that cost nothing

Confirm the tank ball valve is fully open, that the feed valve at the cold supply is open all the way, and that no line is kinked behind the tank or under the cabinet. Listen at the drain saddle: a system that is producing sends a steady trickle to drain. Then check when the pre-filters were last changed. A blinded sediment or carbon cartridge starves the membrane of pressure, and it is by far the most common reason a system that used to work well has slowed down.

Bladder pressure is the usual culprit

The tank is two chambers separated by a rubber bladder, with air on one side pushing water out of the other. Lose that air charge and the tank fills lazily, holds far less and delivers a weak stream. To test it, close the tank valve, drain the tank completely at the faucet, then check the schrader valve at the tank with a low-range gauge against the figure in the manual. If it reads low, add air a little at a time with the tank empty. If air hisses out of the valve continuously, the bladder has failed and the tank is finished.

Membrane, check valve and shut-off valve

If pressure and filters are good and the tank holds its charge, look at the automatic shut-off valve and the check valve. A shut-off that closes early stops production before the tank is full; one that never closes runs water to drain continuously. A tired membrane produces slowly and gives poor quality water at the same time, which a conductivity check will show. Feed pressure below the manufacturer's minimum, common on well systems and upper floors, calls for a booster pump rather than another cartridge.

When it is worth calling someone

If the unit is under warranty, stop before you start swapping parts, because owner repairs can void it. If the feed is a private well with variable pressure, or the system serves more than one outlet such as a fridge line, sizing may be the real problem rather than any single failed component. How long should a reverse osmosis tank take to fill?

Hours rather than minutes is normal, because production is slow by design. If a full recovery now takes noticeably longer than it used to, treat that as the symptom.

Why does my RO faucet run for a few seconds then stop?

That is the classic sign of a tank with no air charge. You are getting only what the membrane makes in real time plus the small amount the tank held.

Can low house pressure stop the tank filling completely?

Yes. Membranes need a minimum feed pressure to work at all, and back pressure from a partly full tank makes it worse. A booster pump is the standard fix.
