If you are buying a hard water filter for garden hose use because your car, windows or boat dry covered in white spots, be clear about the mechanism before you spend. Those spots are dissolved calcium and magnesium left behind as water evaporates, and a cartridge that strains particles cannot remove something that is in solution.
Why the spots appear at all
Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, reported as calcium carbonate, and the USGS bands run soft from 0 to 60 mg/L, moderately hard 61 to 120, hard 121 to 180 and very hard above that. When a droplet dries on paint or glass, the water leaves and the minerals stay as a white ring. The harder your supply, the more mineral each droplet carries and the more visible the deposit, which is why the problem varies so much between towns.
What a standard hose filter can and cannot do
Most hose filters hold a sediment element, sometimes with a little carbon. They will catch rust and grit that would scratch paint during a wash, and carbon will take the edge off a chlorine smell. Neither mechanism removes hardness, so the rinse still dries spotted. A filter sold specifically as a hard water filter is worth reading carefully: if it does not contain exchange resin or a DI bed, it is not removing hardness whatever the label says.
What actually gives a spot free rinse
Two things work. A portable ion exchange softener on the hose removes calcium and magnesium and leaves sodium or potassium behind, which cuts spotting substantially. A deionizing cartridge goes further and removes essentially everything dissolved, which is what professional detailers use for a final rinse because the water can be left to dry without towel drying. Both are consumable: resin exhausts and has to be recharged or replaced.
Choosing the cheaper answer honestly
If the supply is only moderately hard, drying the vehicle with a clean microfiber immediately after rinsing solves the problem for nothing. If it is genuinely hard and you wash often, a portable softener pays for itself in effort saved, and a DI cartridge is worth it only for a final rinse rather than the whole wash, because it is expensive per gallon. Will an inline hose filter stop water spots on my car?
Not if it only holds sediment or carbon. Spots come from dissolved minerals, which need ion exchange or deionization to remove rather than particle filtration.
Is a DI cartridge worth it just for washing a car?
For a final rinse only, often yes, because you can leave the vehicle to dry without spots. Running an entire wash through DI exhausts the resin quickly and gets expensive.
