Choosing an undersink reverse osmosis water filter

An undersink reverse osmosis water filter treats only the water you drink and cook with, pushing it through a semipermeable membrane that rejects dissolved salts and most dissolved contaminants, then sending the clean water to a dedicated faucet. It is the strongest treatment a household can put at a single tap, and the trade is cabinet space, a drain connection and slower delivery than a plain carbon filter.

What the stages actually do

A typical undersink unit runs sediment first to protect everything downstream, then carbon to strip chlorine and chloramine that would otherwise damage the membrane, then the membrane itself, then a final polishing carbon element on the way to the faucet. Only the membrane does the heavy separation. The prefilters exist to keep it alive, which is why skipping a prefilter change is the most common reason a membrane dies years early.

The tank, the drain and the space you need

Reverse osmosis produces water slowly, so almost every undersink system stores it in a small pressurized tank and delivers it on demand through its own faucet. That means you need room for the filter bank, room for the tank standing or lying beside it, a hole in the counter or sink deck for the faucet, a cold feed tee and a drain saddle on the waste arm. Measure the cabinet before you choose a model, because a full sized tank crowds a disposal fast.

Feed pressure, membrane output and permeate pumps

Membranes are pressure driven, and a system fed by weak house pressure both makes less water and sends more to the drain. Well systems with a low pressure switch setting often underperform for exactly this reason. If your pressure is marginal, a booster or permeate pump restores production and cuts waste. Vendor product pages publish a rated daily output and a membrane rating for each model, and those ratings assume good pressure, warm feed water and a fresh membrane.

Where an undersink unit fits, and where it does not

Undersink reverse osmosis is the right answer for drinking and cooking water, ice makers and coffee. It is the wrong answer for showering, laundry and scale on the water heater, because it treats one tap. If hardness is scaling your fixtures, a softener upstream is the fix, and it also extends membrane life by keeping calcium off the film. Pairing the two is common, and our water softener installation guide covers the plumbing order.

PFAS and what the membrane is being asked to do

Membrane filtration is one of the treatment routes households consider for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Under the 2024 federal rule, the EPA set maximum contaminant levels of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS and 10 parts per trillion for PFHxS, PFNA and GenX chemicals, and in May 2026 the agency proposed keeping the PFOA and PFOS limits with a compliance option extended to 2031 while proposing to rescind the others. If PFAS is your reason for buying, check that the specific model is certified for it rather than assuming the membrane covers it.

Questions people ask about undersink reverse osmosis water filter

How often do the filters need changing?

Sediment and carbon prefilters are changed on a schedule set by your water and usage, and the membrane lasts far longer if those prefilters are kept fresh. Manufacturers publish an interval for each stage of their own model.

Does an undersink RO system need electricity?

Most do not. They run on line pressure alone. Systems with a booster pump, a permeate pump of the electric type, or a monitoring display do need an outlet under the sink, so check before you commit to a cabinet.

Can I run the fridge and ice maker off it?

Usually yes, with a tee off the treated line and a longer run of tubing. Expect slower ice production, since the storage tank has to refill between draws and the system produces water gradually.

Will it make the water taste flat?

Some people find highly demineralized water tastes flat. Many systems offer a remineralizing cartridge as a final stage, which adds back a little calcium and magnesium and restores a fuller taste.
