A water conditioner system changes how hardness minerals behave instead of removing them. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium; the USGS scale calls water hard at 121 to 180 mg/L as calcium carbonate and very hard above 180 mg/L. Does a water conditioner make water soft?

No. Softness means the calcium and magnesium are removed, and a conditioner leaves them in the water in crystallized form. A hardness test after a conditioner reads the same as before. What improves is scale accumulation on pipes, heaters and fixtures, which for many buyers was the only complaint anyway.

Does a conditioner system need salt or a drain?
