How the media works, and what poisons it

Template-assisted crystallization media presents microscopic sites where dissolved hardness converts into tiny crystals that stay suspended in the water instead of bonding to pipe walls. Iron, manganese, oil films and bacterial slime coat the beads and shut the process down, which is why manufacturers publish strict limits on what may enter the vessel. On a well, meeting those limits is not automatic, and a conditioner installed without pretreatment can stop working within months while looking exactly as it did on day one.

Expect to install sediment filtration ahead of the conditioner as a minimum, and iron and manganese removal wherever the well test shows them. Water leaving a conditioner still contains all its calcium and magnesium, so a hardness test reads the same as it did going in. Soap still fails to lather the way it does in genuinely soft water, spotting on glassware and shower doors continues, and laundry does not soften. If the reason you are shopping is skin, hair, laundry or the feel of the water, a conditioner will disappoint you and an ion exchange softener will not.
