How does a salt free water softener work in practice?

A salt free water softener does not soften water, and that is the most useful thing to understand about it. It conditions the water: hardness minerals stay dissolved but are converted into microscopic crystals that are far less inclined to stick to pipe walls and heating elements. Nothing is removed, and nothing is exchanged.

The mechanism, plainly

Most salt free units use template assisted crystallization. Water passes through a bed of media whose surface carries nucleation sites, and dissolved calcium and magnesium form tiny crystals there and release into the flow as suspended seed particles rather than as ions looking for a surface. Because scale prefers to grow on those free floating crystals rather than on your pipe, deposits form far more slowly downstream, and existing scale can gradually loosen.

What a hardness test will still say

This trips people up. The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium measured as calcium carbonate, with soft water at 0 to 60 mg/L, moderately hard 61 to 120, hard 121 to 180 and very hard above 180 mg/L. A conditioner does not change that number, so a test strip after a salt free unit reads exactly as hard as before. That is not a fault: it is the design. A test strip is simply the wrong way to check whether one is working.

What you gain and what you give up

You gain no salt, no brine discharge, no drain connection, no regeneration cycle, no salt to carry, and no wastewater, which matters in places restricting brine discharge. You give up the classic soft water experience: no slippery feel, soap and detergent still fight the hardness so you use as much as before, spotting on glassware continues, and hard water film in the shower still needs cleaning. Scale protection is the benefit, not softness.

When it is the right choice, and when it is not

Choose salt free when your goal is protecting the water heater and plumbing, you cannot discharge brine, or you dislike the taste of softened water. Choose an ion exchange softener when you want less soap, cleaner glassware and softer laundry, or when hardness is very high.
