Salt free water conditioning controls limescale without softening the water: the minerals stay in, but they are converted into a form that will not stick to pipes and heating elements. How template assisted crystallization works

TAC media is a bed of polymer beads whose surfaces carry nucleation sites. As hard water flows past, dissolved calcium and magnesium form tiny, stable crystals on those sites, which then detach and travel with the water. Because the minerals are locked up as suspended crystals rather than dissolved ions, they have little tendency to precipitate as scale on hot surfaces. The bed does not consume salt, does not regenerate, needs no drain or electricity, and the media cartridge is simply replaced on the maker's schedule after years of service.

What a conditioner does not do

The minerals remain in the water. The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, and since conditioning removes neither, a hardness test after a conditioner still reads hard: that is expected, not a failure. You will not get the slick shower feel, the reduced soap use, or the spot-free glassware that ion-exchange softening delivers, and existing heavy scale is reduced only gradually. Does salt free conditioning actually soften water?
