A salt-based softener removes hardness minerals from the water. A salt-free system leaves them in and changes their behavior so they are less likely to stick. That single difference drives everything else: what the water feels like, what your appliances see, what maintenance you sign up for and what a hardness test says afterward. Ion exchange: removal, and proof of removal
