What a remineralization water filter adds back, and why

A remineralization water filter is a final-stage cartridge that adds a small amount of calcium and magnesium back into water that a reverse osmosis membrane or a distiller has stripped almost bare. It exists because those minerals carry most of what we register as the taste of water, and because water with nothing dissolved in it is chemically aggressive toward the metal it flows through afterward.

Why treated water tastes flat

The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, with soft water at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above 180 mg/L. A reverse osmosis membrane rejects the large majority of those dissolved minerals along with the contaminants it was bought for, and a distiller leaves them behind in the boiler. What comes out the other side is close to pure, and pure water has very little flavor. People describe it as flat, empty or slightly sharp, and coffee and tea made with it often taste thinner than they expect.

What the cartridge actually contains

Most remineralization cartridges are packed with calcite, which is crushed calcium carbonate, sometimes blended with a magnesium oxide medium. Water passing through dissolves a small quantity of both, which raises the mineral content and the pH a little at the same time. The media is consumed as it works, so the cartridge genuinely runs out rather than clogging, and the sign of exhaustion is the taste drifting back toward flat. Some products use a mineral blend in a small inline housing, others come as drops added by hand to a pitcher, which does the same chemistry without the plumbing.

The corrosion argument

Water with almost nothing dissolved in it is more aggressive toward copper and brass than mineralized water is, which matters if the treated line runs any distance through metal fittings before it reaches you. Adding back a little hardness and lifting the pH slightly makes the water less hungry. In a typical under-sink installation the treated run is short and mostly plastic tubing, so this is a secondary consideration rather than the main reason to fit one. It matters more with whole-house reverse osmosis, where treated water goes on to fill the entire plumbing system.

Where it goes and what it does not do

Fit it as the last stage, after the storage tank and before the faucet, so the water is mineralized on its way out rather than sitting mineralized in the tank. If you also feed a refrigerator, tee off after the remineralization cartridge so the ice and the faucet match. What it will not do is return your water to its original hardness or undo the softening you paid for, and it will not put scale back on your fixtures: the quantity involved is small and deliberate. Questions people ask about remineralization water filter

Does a remineralization filter make my water hard again?

No. It adds a small, controlled amount of calcium and magnesium for taste and stability, far below the levels that cause scaling on fixtures and heating elements.

Does it raise the pH of reverse osmosis water?

Slightly, yes. Calcite dissolving into the water lifts the pH as well as the mineral content, which is part of why treated water becomes less aggressive to metal.

Where should the cartridge be installed?

As the final stage after the storage tank and before the faucet, so water is mineralized on the way out. Tee any refrigerator line off downstream of it.

Do I need one at all?
