Reverse osmosis removes dissolved material without discriminating, so the minerals that give water its taste and its chemical stability go out with everything else. A remineralization cartridge is the stage that puts a small, controlled amount back. It is inexpensive, easy to retrofit, and it addresses the most common complaint about a new RO system.
What the media does
The cartridge holds a bed of mineral media, typically calcium and magnesium bearing, and treated water passes slowly through it on the way to the faucet. A small quantity dissolves into water that has been stripped of almost everything, raising the mineral content and, as a consequence, lifting pH from the slightly acidic value typical of fresh permeate towards neutral or a little above. The media is consumed as it works, so this is a consumable stage rather than a permanent fitting, and a spent cartridge simply passes water through unchanged.
Where it goes in the stack
Last. It sits after the membrane and after any polishing carbon, immediately before the faucet, so that nothing downstream strips out what it has just added. On systems with a storage tank there is a choice: fitting it after the tank treats water on its way to the tap, which is the common arrangement, while fitting it before the tank means the minerals sit in storage. Follow the manufacturer's layout, and check tubing sizes before ordering a retrofit cartridge, since the fittings have to match the system you own.
What it changes and what it does not
Taste is the honest benefit, and it is a real one: demineralized water tastes flat, and a small mineral content restores the character that makes water, tea and coffee taste normal. The second benefit is chemical: water with no dissolved content is aggressive to metals it sits against, and a mineral content makes it less so. What it does not do is undo the treatment, and the health claims attached to raised pH deserve scepticism, since the body regulates its own pH closely and the mineral quantity added is modest against what food supplies.
Replacing it on schedule
The media is used up rather than clogged, so the failure mode is silent: the cartridge keeps passing water and stops adding anything. There is no pressure change and often no obvious taste cliff, so it goes on the schedule with the other cartridges rather than being judged by symptom.
