Fitting one filter is a simple job. Building a whole treatment train, with sediment, carbon, softening and perhaps iron removal in a row, is a different exercise: the plumbing layout decides whether the result can be serviced, extended and diagnosed, or whether every future job means cutting pipe. Getting the layout right costs a few fittings and saves years of awkwardness.
The stage order is not a preference
Sediment first, because grit damages or blinds everything after it. Then any pH correction, since iron and manganese oxidation are pH sensitive. Then iron and manganese treatment, so oxidized particles never reach resin. Then softening. Then carbon, positioned according to whether you want it protecting a membrane or simply polishing taste. Then any membrane. Ultraviolet last of all, as close as practical to where water enters the house. Every one of those placements exists because a stage either damages, or is damaged by, another.
Unions, isolation and a whole system bypass
Put isolation valves either side of every vessel and a union on each connection, so any single stage can be removed without touching its neighbours. Then add one bypass across the entire train, which is what keeps the house in water while anything is being worked on and what lets you prove whether the treatment is causing a problem. That single valve set is the most useful thing in the installation and the one most often left out. Label each valve, because in three years nobody will remember.
Clearances, weight and the room itself
Each vessel needs headroom above it to lift the control valve and load media, and each cartridge housing needs clearance below equal to a cartridge length. Filled vessels are heavy, so they stand on a solid level base and the pipework must not carry weight. Leave room to get a tank in and out of the room, which sounds obvious and is discovered too late surprisingly often. Provide a floor drain or a tray where possible, plus power for the valves and a light you can actually see by.
Test points, and knowing where to stop
Fit a sampling tap between every stage. That is a few cheap fittings and it turns future diagnosis from guesswork into measurement, because you can test the water leaving each vessel and find the one that has stopped working. Fit pressure gauges before and after the sediment stage at minimum. Finally, check what local code requires: some jurisdictions require licensed work or inspection for changes to the incoming plumbing.
