There are two things people mean by a DIY water softener, and only one of them is real. The first is building an ion exchange unit from household parts, which does not work: the resin, the control valve and the brine system are manufactured components with no homemade equivalent. The homemade softener does not exist
Softening is ion exchange over a bed of resin beads that swap calcium and magnesium for sodium, and then get recharged with a strong brine solution on a controlled cycle. That cycle is the whole machine: backwash, brine draw, slow rinse, fast rinse, refill, timed and sequenced by the control valve. None of that can be improvised. Adding washing soda to the laundry, running vinegar through a kettle or hanging a bag of salt in a tank changes nothing about the supply feeding the house. Those tricks treat symptoms in one appliance. If the goal is soft water at every tap, the resin and valve have to be bought.
What a DIY install actually involves
Fitting a bought softener means cutting into the main line after the meter or pressure tank and before the water heater, installing a bypass, connecting inlet and outlet the right way round, running a drain line for the regeneration discharge, running an overflow line from the brine tank, connecting the brine line, and plugging in the valve. The plumbing skill required depends on your pipe: PEX with push-to-connect fittings is straightforward, copper needs soldering or press fittings, and galvanized steel usually means a transition and more work than expected. Set the hardness and, where relevant, the iron figure on the valve from an actual test result, not from a neighbor's.
The parts homeowners get wrong
The drain line is the most common failure: it must discharge with an air gap so nothing can be siphoned back into the softener, and it must not be run uphill beyond what the valve can push. The brine tank overflow is a separate line and is not optional, because a stuck float without one floods the room. Cutting a copper main can break the electrical bonding path, so a bonding jumper across the cut is a genuine safety item, not a formality. A full resin tank is heavy and needs a level, supported base. And a sediment prefilter ahead of the softener protects the valve and the bed, which is cheap insurance on any well.
When to stop and call somebody
Hand the job over if the work involves soldering near a gas line or in a tight joist bay, if the incoming line is a material you have not worked with, if local code requires a permit or an inspected backflow arrangement, or if the manufacturer's warranty is conditional on professional installation, which some are.
