Well water filtering systems: matching the stages to your test

Well water filtering systems are built in stages, and the right stages depend entirely on a lab test of your well, not on symptoms alone. A typical train runs sediment filter, then iron or sulfur treatment, then carbon, with UV last if bacteria showed up. Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody tests the water but you, which is why the test comes before any purchase.

Test first: the system is the answer to a lab report

The EPA notes that around 15 percent of the US population relies on private wells, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. That is the case for a full lab panel before buying anything: iron, manganese, hardness, pH, sulfur, nitrate, bacteria and, where relevant, arsenic. Each result maps to a specific stage. The stages, in the order they belong

Sediment filtration comes first so sand and grit never reach the finer equipment. Iron and sulfur treatment comes next, usually an air-injection or oxidizing media tank that converts dissolved metals to particles and backwashes them away; vendors such as SpringWell publish the flow ratings and pipe sizes for these tanks on their product pages. Carbon follows to polish taste and odor. A softener slots in after iron treatment if hardness is the complaint. UV disinfection goes last, after everything else has cleared the water, because cloudy water shadows the lamp and lets microbes through.

Point of entry or point of use

Whole-house (point-of-entry) equipment protects plumbing, fixtures and appliances from iron staining, scale and rotten-egg odor, and it is where sediment, iron, sulfur and softening belong. Point-of-use treatment, usually reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink, is the tool for dissolved health contaminants such as nitrate or arsenic in drinking and cooking water. Many well households run both: the big tanks fix the house, the under-sink unit provides the final barrier at the one tap the family drinks from. Neither replaces retesting the well every year.
