Water filters for well water systems are chosen from a lab report, never from a catalog. A private well has no utility standing behind it and no annual report arriving in the mail, so the test is the only description of your water anyone has. Once you have it, the equipment list writes itself in a fairly predictable order.
Why the test comes first on a well
Private wells are not regulated federally under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the EPA notes that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on them. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. That is the whole argument for testing before buying: the odds are meaningful, and nothing about the taste of the water tells you which one you have.
Iron and manganese usually set the design
Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary standards, which are aesthetic rather than health based, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese. Those small numbers are what stain the laundry orange and put black specks in the toilet tank. They also decide your hardware, because a softener can strip dissolved iron only within limits: pH above 6.7, hardness between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L. Above that, an oxidizing filter has to do the work first.
The usual filter order on a well
After the pressure tank comes sediment, because well water carries sand and grit that will chew a control valve. Oxidation and an iron or manganese media tank come next where the test calls for them. An acid neutralizer goes in if the pH is low enough to be dissolving copper out of your own pipes. Carbon follows for odor and organics, then a softener for hardness, then ultraviolet last if bacteria were found. Skipping a stage does not save money, it just moves the failure to the stage behind it.
What filters cannot do, and what to buy instead
Filtration is not disinfection. A coliform positive is answered by shock chlorination of the well and casing, a retest, and then an ultraviolet lamp or continuous chlorination if it returns. Dissolved nitrate from farmland passes through sediment and carbon untouched and needs reverse osmosis or anion exchange. Will one big cartridge filter handle well water?
