The valve does this on a schedule or by measured volume, which is why backwashing tanks handle heavy iron and sediment loads that would eat cartridges monthly.

Filtering costs pressure, and on a well the budget is finite: the pump and pressure tank define what is available, and every stage spends some of it. A system sized below the household's peak flow chokes showers the moment laundry runs; media beds that never see their minimum backwash flow do not clean themselves properly and slowly foul. The upkeep rhythm that keeps it working

Backwashing media lasts years but the valve settings deserve a seasonal glance, and the drain line should be seen actually flowing during a cycle. Why does my well filter clog so quickly?

Either the cartridge is rated too fine for the sediment load or the well is producing more grit than filtration should absorb. A coarser prefilter or spin-down strainer helps; heavy ongoing sand may point at the well itself.
