Most well owners come to water filtering systems for wells with a symptom rather than a lab report: a stained tub, a smell that only shows up on the hot side, grit in the aerators. Each of those points at a different class of equipment, and each class asks for a different amount of ongoing work from you.
Orange or brown staining, and black specks
Staining is the classic iron and manganese signature, and it is why so many well systems are built around an oxidizing filter. Penn State Extension treats both as aesthetic problems with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, which is a reminder that water can look and taste bad long before it is unsafe. A softener can carry the load when the water is mildly affected, specifically with pH above 6.7, hardness of 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron below 5 mg/L, but iron that has already oxidized will foul the resin instead of passing through it.
Rotten egg smell, especially on the hot side
Hydrogen sulfide gives the egg smell. If it appears only on hot water, the problem is often the sacrificial anode rod in the water heater reacting with sulfate in the water, and replacing that rod is far cheaper than any treatment system. If the smell is on both hot and cold, it is coming up the well and needs treatment, usually air injection or another oxidizing media bed at the point of entry. Diagnosing which of the two it is takes about a minute at the taps and saves a great deal of money.
Grit, cloudiness and short pump cycles
Sand and silt mean either a well drawing from a shallow or disturbed formation or a screen that is failing. A spin down separator with a flush valve, followed by a pleated or string wound sediment cartridge, catches it and protects everything behind it. Cloudiness that clears from the bottom of the glass upward is usually just dissolved air from the pressure tank and needs nothing at all. If cloudiness persists after standing, it is fine suspended solids and a finer sediment stage is the answer.
What owning these systems actually costs you in work
A backwashing iron filter rinses itself to the drain and needs media replaced in years, not months, but it needs a drain, an outlet and a working control valve. Cartridge sediment filters cost less and want your hands several times a year. Softeners need salt and an occasional resin cleaner. Questions people ask about water filtering systems for wells
Can one system fix staining, smell and grit together?
Often yes, as a multi stage train on the main line, but it is still three jobs handled by three stages rather than a single tank doing everything at once.
Why does my water only smell in the morning?
Water sitting overnight in the heater or the pipes concentrates whatever is in it. A smell that flushes out after running the tap for a minute usually points at the plumbing rather than the well.
Does a filter make my well water safe from bacteria?
No. Sediment, iron and carbon stages do not disinfect. Bacteria are handled by shock chlorinating the well and then fitting an ultraviolet lamp or continuous chlorination.
