A softener that has not touched its salt for weeks is telling you one of two things: it is regenerating normally on a low demand schedule, or it has stopped drawing brine at all. Those look identical from the outside, so start by proving which one you have before you open anything. In most homes the cause turns out to be a crusted salt bridge or a blocked brine draw, not a dead control valve.
First prove the salt really is not moving
Level the salt with a stick, draw a line on the inside of the tank with a marker, note the date, and leave it alone for two weeks. A metered valve only regenerates when it has passed the volume it was programmed for, so a small household on moderately hard water can genuinely go a long stretch between cycles. While you wait, check whether the water is still soft: soap that lathers instantly and no fresh chalk on the kettle element means the resin is still working. Hard water plus an untouched salt line is a fault. Soft water plus an untouched line usually is not.
Break the salt bridge and look underneath
A salt bridge is a solid crust that spans the tank with an empty gap beneath it. The salt above never reaches the brine, so the valve draws water with almost nothing dissolved in it and the level never appears to drop. Humidity, a tank filled to the brim, and fine crystal or rock salt all encourage it. Push a broom handle straight down in several places until you feel the crust break, then scoop out the loose debris. Pouring a bucket of hot water over stubborn crust will soften it. Once the tank is clear, refill with clean pellets and stop well short of the top.
The brine draw: injector, line, float and pressure
During the brine cycle the valve uses a venturi injector to suck brine out of the tank. Anything that spoils that suction stops salt use dead. Pull the injector cap and inspect the small nozzle and its screen for salt fines, rust flakes or grit, and rinse them clean rather than poking at the orifice. Check the brine line for a loose nut or a hairline split, because an air leak kills the draw as effectively as a blockage. Check that the safety float in the brine well slides freely and has not stuck in the raised position. Low incoming pressure or a partly closed drain line will also stop the venturi from pulling.
When the valve is not regenerating at all
If the injector is clean and the tank has brine, the next suspect is the control head. Put it into a manual regeneration and watch and listen: you should hear the drain flow change through backwash, brine draw, slow rinse and refill, and you should see the brine level fall by the end of the draw. Nothing happening at all points to a power interruption that reset the clock, a bypass valve someone left open after a repair, or a fouled meter turbine that no longer counts the water going through. A head that will not advance under manual command is a service call, not a homeowner fix.
What normal salt use looks like in your house
There is no universal figure for how fast a tank should empty. Consumption is set by three things: how hard the incoming water is, how much water the household actually uses, and how much salt per regeneration the valve has been programmed to draw. A high efficiency setting on soft-ish water can look almost static next to a large family on very hard well water. The useful habit is to keep the tank at least a third full, mark the level each time you top it up, and learn your own interval. Questions people ask about water softener not using salt
Can a water softener work without using any salt?
No. Ion exchange resin only recovers its softening capacity when brine is drawn through it, so once capacity is exhausted, untreated hard water passes straight through the tank.
Should there be water sitting in the brine tank?
On most systems, yes. A standing pool of brine below the salt is normal and is what the valve draws from. A bone-dry tank with a full load of salt suggests the refill step is failing.
Is a salt bridge going to damage the softener?
Not directly, but it starves the resin of brine, so the beads stay loaded with hardness minerals and you get hard water while believing the tank is full of salt.
Does the type of salt change how fast it disappears?
It changes how cleanly it dissolves. Clean pellets leave little residue, while rock salt carries insoluble grit that settles in the bottom of the tank and can reach the injector screen.
