Whole-house reverse osmosis earns its place when the dissolved load in the water is the problem everywhere, not just at the drinking tap: brackish or high dissolved-solids well water that leaves deposits on every fixture, arsenic or nitrate that a household wants removed from all use, or a supply so saline that laundry and appliances suffer. If the concern is only what you drink and cook with, a point-of-use unit at the kitchen sink achieves the same water quality for a fraction of the equipment and running cost.

Pretreatment is most of the design

Membranes are intolerant. Chlorine attacks the common membrane material, so carbon has to strip it first. Sediment scores and blinds the surface, so filtration comes ahead of it. Hardness and iron scale the membrane, so softening or iron removal is usually mandatory upstream. Skipping pretreatment does not produce bad water; it produces a short membrane life and a large replacement bill. The pretreatment train is often more equipment than the reverse osmosis stage itself.

Tank, pump and reject water

A membrane cannot supply a running shower directly, so treated water accumulates in an atmospheric storage tank and a delivery pump repressurizes it into the house. That means floor space, an electrical supply and a pump that will eventually need service. Reverse osmosis also sends a reject stream to drain continuously while it produces, so the installation needs a drain that can take it and a household that accepts water going down it. On a well, the pump duty cycle rises accordingly.

Remineralization and what soft, flat water does

Water stripped of dissolved minerals tastes flat to many people and is mildly aggressive toward some plumbing materials, which is why whole-house systems commonly add a remineralizing or pH-correcting stage after the membrane.
