Whole house reverse osmosis system for well water: is it right?

A whole house reverse osmosis system for well water is the heaviest treatment a household can install, and for most wells it is the wrong answer. It is justified when the source has high dissolved solids across the board, brackish or saline intrusion, or a chemical problem that cheaper media cannot address. Everything else on a well is better handled by targeted treatment.

What it takes to run RO at household flow

Point-of-use RO fills a small tank slowly for one faucet. Whole-house RO has to serve every fixture, so the architecture changes completely: a membrane array producing water continuously, an atmospheric storage tank holding a day's supply, and a repressurization pump with its own pressure tank pushing that stored water into the house. Add level controls, a means of turning production on and off, and a drain able to accept the reject stream. This is a plant room, not an appliance, and it needs space, power and a floor drain.

Pretreatment is most of the system

Membranes are unforgiving. Sediment scours and blinds them, hardness scales them, iron and manganese foul them, and chlorine destroys the common membrane material outright. So a whole-house RO is preceded by sediment filtration, iron and manganese removal where present, and a softener to protect against scaling. Penn State Extension gives the aesthetic yardsticks of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, and anything approaching those needs handling before the membranes. If a well is dosed with chlorine for bacteria, carbon must remove that residual before the membrane sees it.

When it is genuinely the right choice

High total dissolved solids that make water taste salty or brackish, sodium from coastal intrusion, nitrate too high for a softener or media to touch, and multi-contaminant wells where the list of targeted systems has grown longer than one membrane array. Arsenic, uranium and fluoride are commonly cited too, though targeted media exist for each and are usually cheaper. The honest test is arithmetic: if three or four separate systems would be needed and each has its own media, service and failure mode, a single RO train with good pretreatment starts to make sense.

What you give up

RO sends a share of the feed water to drain, so the well pump runs more and the septic or drainage system takes more flow, which is a real constraint on a small lot. The treated water is aggressive and low in minerals, so a remineralization or pH correction stage after the membranes is usually needed to stop it attacking copper plumbing. Stored water in an atmospheric tank must be protected from contamination and is often finished with UV before it enters the house. And the repressurization pump means no water when the power is out, unlike a simple well pump on a generator circuit.

The cheaper path most wells should take

Test first, then treat what the test found: sediment filtration for grit, oxidation and filtration for iron and sulfur, a softener for hardness, UV or injection for bacteria, and a point-of-use RO under the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking. That last piece gives you RO-quality water where you actually drink it, at a fraction of the equipment, wastewater and maintenance. Do I need a softener before whole-house RO?

Almost always. Hardness scales membranes and shortens their life sharply, so a softener ahead of the array is standard practice on hard well water.
