What the rating actually promises
A micron rating describes the particle size a cartridge captures, but there are two ways of stating it. A nominal rating means the cartridge captures most particles at that size, and manufacturers differ on what most means. An absolute rating is a much stricter claim. Two cartridges labelled the same number can perform quite differently if one is nominal and the other absolute, so read the specification rather than the headline number.
Where the coarser cartridge is the right call
On a well with sand or grit, or on any supply where a filter change is a chore, the coarser cartridge is usually correct as the only stage. It protects pumps, valves, appliance solenoids and softener beds from the particles that actually cause damage, and it keeps flow up across the whole house. Fitting a fine cartridge as a single stage on dirty water is the classic mistake: it works beautifully for a fortnight, then chokes.
Where the finer cartridge earns its place
Fine filtration matters when something downstream is sensitive. Reverse osmosis membranes, ultraviolet disinfection and fine irrigation emitters all want clear water. Ultraviolet in particular relies on light reaching organisms, and suspended particles shield them, so clarity is part of the disinfection. Fine filtration also removes the cloudiness people complain about at the tap, which coarse cartridges pass without touching.
Stage them instead of choosing
The professional answer is usually both, in order, coarse first and fine second. The coarse cartridge takes the bulk load and protects the fine one, so the expensive stage lasts far longer and the total cost of cartridges falls.
