Choosing between a one micron and a five micron cartridge is the most common sediment filtration decision and the one most often made backwards. The finer rating sounds better, and on water with any real sediment load it will block quickly, restrict flow, and cost more to run while protecting nothing extra. The right choice comes from what is in the water and what is behind the filter.

What the two ratings actually catch

A five micron cartridge stops sand, grit, rust flakes, pipe scale and most visible particles, which covers the great majority of what damages appliances, valves and downstream cartridges. A one micron cartridge additionally catches finer silt and, if it is absolute rated, particles down to the size range where specific claims such as cyst reduction become possible. The gap between them is real but narrow, and it only matters if the water is actually carrying material in that size range or if the downstream stage demands it.

The cost of going too fine

A cartridge blocks when it has captured enough material, and a finer one reaches that point sooner on the same water. On a supply with visible sediment, a one micron cartridge can be finished in weeks while a five micron one runs for months, and the household experiences the difference as falling pressure and frequent changes. There is also flow: fine cartridges restrict more when new and much more as they load, and at whole house scale that shows up as poor pressure whenever two fixtures run.

Staging beats choosing

Where fine filtration is genuinely needed, the efficient arrangement is both: a five micron cartridge first to take the bulk of the load, and a one micron behind it to polish. The coarse stage is cheap and does the heavy work, and the fine stage lasts many times longer than it would alone because it only ever sees what got past. That costs one extra housing and saves repeatedly on cartridges and on the nuisance of low pressure. It is the standard arrangement on well water for exactly this reason.

Nominal against absolute, which matters more than the number

A nominal rating means most particles at that size are caught and some pass. An absolute rating means essentially all are. Two cartridges printed with the same micron figure can therefore behave quite differently, and only an absolute rating supports a specific removal claim.
