A one micron cartridge is a fine sediment filter, tight enough to catch particles well below what the eye can see and, in absolute rated versions, tight enough to be claimed against protozoan cysts. It is a useful specification in the right position and a poor buy in the wrong one, because a tighter rating always costs pressure and service life.
Nominal against absolute, which changes everything
A nominal rating means the cartridge captures most particles at that size, typically a large majority but not all. An absolute rating means essentially all of them, verified to a defined test. The two are printed identically on the shelf and mean very different things: cyst reduction claims require an absolute rating, and a nominal one micron cartridge passes a meaningful share of what it is nominally rated for. If the reason for buying is a specific contaminant rather than general clarity, only an absolute rating answers it.
What it will and will not remove
It removes fine silt, rust particles, precipitated iron, sand and, at an absolute rating, cysts such as cryptosporidium and giardia. It does not remove anything dissolved, which is the distinction that matters most: hardness, dissolved iron, nitrate, arsenic, chlorine, tannins and total dissolved solids all pass straight through a one micron cartridge as though it were not there. It also does not disinfect, since bacteria and viruses are considerably smaller than one micron and are not retained at all.
Where it belongs in the sequence
Second or later, never first. Placed at the head of a system on water carrying visible grit it blinds within weeks and costs the house pressure, and the cost is entirely avoidable. Fit a coarser cartridge ahead of it so the cheap element absorbs the bulk of the load and the fine one deals with what gets through, which extends the tight cartridge's life several times over. Its other common position is immediately before a reverse osmosis membrane or a UV chamber, both of which need clear water to work.
Living with the pressure drop
A one micron cartridge restricts more than a coarse one from new, and the restriction grows as it loads. On a whole house feed use a big diameter housing, which has enough media area that a tight rating is manageable, rather than a slim one, which will not deliver household flow at this rating for long. Fit gauges either side and change on pressure drop rather than on appearance, since a fine cartridge blinded by silt often looks nearly clean. Is one micron better than five micron?
Only for the right job. It catches finer particles but costs more pressure and blinds sooner, so it belongs after a coarser stage, not first.
