Legionella test kit options and how sampling works

A legionella test kit collects a water or swab sample from your building's plumbing and sends it to a laboratory, because legionella is not a supply problem, it is a building problem. The bacteria colonize warm water systems: water heaters set too low, dead legs, rarely used showers and outlets, and the biofilm inside them. Where you sample matters as much as which kit you buy.

Why your utility report does not cover this

The EPA requires every community water system to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for them, and that report describes the water the utility delivers to the property line. Legionella grows downstream of that point, in the building's own hot water system, where temperatures are favorable and the disinfectant residual has faded. So a clean utility report tells you nothing about legionella in your own plumbing. That is also why the fix is almost always in the building: temperature control, flushing stagnant outlets and removing dead legs, rather than anything installed at the point of entry.

Water samples and swab samples

Most kits offer two sample types and they answer different questions. A water sample, typically a first-draw collected without flushing, tells you what is coming out of that outlet right now. A swab of the inside of a shower head, a faucet aerator or a tap outlet targets the biofilm, which is where the bacteria actually live and multiply, and often finds colonization that a water sample misses. Sampling both from the same outlet gives a much more useful picture. Sample points that matter are the water heater outlet, the furthest and least used fixtures, and any shower that sits unused for long stretches.

Culture, PCR and the results you get back

Laboratory culture is the reference method: the sample is grown on selective media and the result is reported as a countable quantity of viable bacteria, which is what most guidance is written around. Its drawback is time, since results take several days to well over a week. PCR methods detect legionella genetic material and return an answer far faster, but they cannot distinguish living organisms from dead ones, so a positive after a disinfection can reflect residue rather than a live population. Rapid at-home strip tests exist and are best treated as a prompt to arrange a proper laboratory test, not as an answer in themselves.

What to do with a positive result

Take it to a professional. Remediation of a colonized building system is normally thermal disinfection, chemical disinfection, or both, followed by a control plan covering water heater temperature, elimination of dead legs, and regular flushing of low-use outlets, then repeat testing to confirm. Where the building serves people at higher risk, your state or local health department is the right first call and often has specific guidance and reporting expectations. Do not treat a point-of-use filter as a solution to a colonized system, though certified point-of-use barriers are used as an interim measure while remediation is carried out. Can I test for legionella at home?

You can collect the sample at home. The analysis is done by a laboratory, and mail-in kits are essentially a sampling container plus prepaid shipping to that laboratory.

Should I sample water or swab the outlet?

Both, ideally from the same fixture. A water sample shows what is coming out now, while a swab targets the biofilm inside the outlet where the bacteria actually live.

How long do results take?

Culture methods usually take several days to over a week because the bacteria have to grow. PCR is much faster but cannot tell living organisms from dead ones.

Where should I sample first?

The water heater outlet and the least used fixtures, especially showers that sit idle for long periods. Stagnation and warm temperatures are what allow colonization to establish.
