How a well aeration system removes iron and sulfur smell

A well aeration system introduces air into the water so that dissolved iron and manganese oxidize into particles a filter can catch, and so that hydrogen sulfide gas, the rotten egg smell, is stripped out and vented. It is the chemical free approach to two of the most common well water complaints, and it has clear strengths and equally clear limits.

The two things air does

Oxidation first. Dissolved iron and manganese pass through any mechanical filter unchanged and then stain fixtures and laundry when they meet air later. Introducing oxygen deliberately, in a tank where there is time for the reaction, converts them to solid particles that the filter bed immediately downstream removes. Stripping second. Hydrogen sulfide is a dissolved gas, and agitating the water in contact with air releases it so it can be vented outside rather than arriving at the tap as a smell.

How the hardware is arranged

The common domestic design is a single tank holding a pocket of compressed air above the water. Water enters through a spray head or a venturi, falls through the air pocket picking up oxygen, and leaves from the bottom. The air pocket is maintained either by a small compressor on a timer or by drawing air in during each cycle, and it is vented and recharged periodically so the accumulated gas does not build up. Downstream sits a filter bed that catches everything the oxidation produced, and that pairing is not optional.

Where it works and where it does not

Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, and that softeners can only handle dissolved iron when pH is above 6.7, hardness is between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L. Aeration is the answer above those limits, where a softener would simply be fouled. It struggles at low pH, since oxidation slows markedly, so a neutralizer usually comes first. Manganese in particular oxidizes reluctantly with air alone.

Living with one

The running cost is low, with no chemicals to buy or store and only a small compressor drawing power. The maintenance is the air pocket and the downstream bed: a system that loses its air charge quietly stops oxidizing and the staining returns before anyone connects the two events.
