A reverse osmosis water softener system is two machines doing complementary jobs: the softener protects the whole house from scale and, in doing so, protects the membrane; the reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink removes what the softener leaves behind, including the sodium the softening process adds. Order matters, and so does where you tee the feed.
The softener goes first, always
Reverse osmosis concentrates whatever is in the feed water against the membrane surface. On hard water that means calcium and magnesium precipitating as scale exactly where you least want it, which costs you production rate, rejection quality and membrane life. Softening ahead of the membrane removes those hardness ions before they reach it. This is why membrane manufacturers publish hardness limits for feed water and why installers treat a softener on hard water as a required pretreatment rather than an optional extra. The same logic puts sediment and carbon stages ahead of the membrane too.
Reverse osmosis removes the sodium the softener adds
Ion exchange works by swapping calcium and magnesium for sodium held on the resin, so softened water carries more sodium than the water going in, roughly in proportion to how hard the original water was. Most households never notice, but anyone on a sodium-restricted diet, and anyone who dislikes the slightly different taste, has a reason to care. An under-sink reverse osmosis unit rejects that sodium along with everything else, which is why the pairing is so common: you get scale-free water at every fixture and low-mineral water at the tap you drink from.
Where to tee the reverse osmosis feed
Feed the reverse osmosis unit from the softened cold line, not from a bypassed hard line. Some households run a hard water line to an outside spigot or to the kitchen cold tap and inadvertently plumb the reverse osmosis feed off that, then wonder why the membrane needs replacing early. Check what the kitchen cold supply is actually connected to before you tap it. If your softener has a bypass for irrigation, make sure the reverse osmosis tee is on the treated side of it, and label the valves so a future plumber does not undo the arrangement.
Two systems, two maintenance rhythms
The softener needs salt kept topped up, the brine tank checked for a hardened crust, and the resin bed reviewed after several years of service. The reverse osmosis unit needs its prefilters changed on schedule, its membrane replaced when rejection falls, and its storage tank pressure checked periodically. They fail in different ways: a softener that has stopped regenerating shows up as scale and slippery-water loss, a reverse osmosis system that has stopped working shows up as slow flow at the dedicated faucet. Do I need both a softener and reverse osmosis?
If your water is hard and you also want low-mineral drinking water, yes. The softener protects the whole house and the membrane; the RO unit treats what you drink.
Can reverse osmosis replace a water softener?
Not at whole-house scale for most homes. A point-of-use RO unit treats a few gallons a day and does nothing for the scale forming in your water heater and fixtures.
Does softened water damage an RO membrane?
No, it protects it. Hard water is what scales the membrane; softened feed water extends membrane life considerably.
Will the RO unit remove the salty taste from softened water?
