Feed the reverse osmosis unit from softened water. Hardness scales the membrane surface, and scaling is the fastest way to shorten membrane life and cut production. Running the drinking water line off softened water means the membrane sees a far easier feed and lasts substantially longer. The one caveat is that softening exchanges hardness for sodium, so the membrane is then also removing that sodium, which it does well. This is why installers plumb the reverse osmosis tee downstream of the softener.
What the pairing does to taste
Softened water tastes slightly different to some people because the calcium is gone, and it feels slippery in the shower because soap rinses properly. Neither effect reaches the drinking tap once reverse osmosis is in place, since the membrane strips the sodium along with everything else. Households that find the result flat add a remineralizing cartridge as the last stage before the faucet, which puts back a little calcium and magnesium purely for taste.
Space, drains and the install itself
The softener needs a spot near the main entry with a drain for the regeneration cycle, a power outlet for the valve, and access for salt deliveries into the brine tank. The reverse osmosis unit needs cabinet space under the sink, a cold feed tee, a drain saddle and a faucet hole. The two installs are usually done together but they are separate pieces of work in separate parts of the house. The systems do not share a maintenance calendar. The softener wants salt kept topped up, the brine tank checked for a salt bridge, and the settings reviewed if your hardness or household size changes. The reverse osmosis system wants prefilters changed on schedule and a membrane replaced far less often, with the tank pressure checked when production seems slow. Vendors publish capacity steps for softeners and stage intervals for membranes, and following both is what keeps the pair working.
Questions people ask about water softener and reverse osmosis system
Does reverse osmosis remove the sodium a softener adds?
Yes. The membrane rejects sodium along with other dissolved ions, so drinking water from the reverse osmosis faucet does not carry the sodium added by ion exchange upstream.
Can I run reverse osmosis without a softener on hard water?
You can, but the membrane scales and needs replacing sooner, and production falls off between replacements. Softening the feed is the cheapest thing you can do for membrane life.
Do I need reverse osmosis if I already have a softener?
Only if you want dissolved contaminants removed at the drinking tap. A softener addresses hardness and nothing else, so lead, nitrate, PFAS and taste complaints remain until something else handles them.
Should the reverse osmosis unit run off hot or cold water?
Cold only, always. Hot water damages the membrane and the housings, so the feed is teed off the cold supply under the sink.
