Reverse osmosis sends part of the feed to drain, which matters more on a well because that water was pumped and paid for in electricity, and because the reject stream has to go somewhere acceptable, often a septic system that is already handling household flow. Discuss the drain path before installing. Keep to the pre-filter schedule strictly, since pre-filters are what stand between your well and an expensive membrane, and retest the treated water annually so you find a failing membrane by measurement rather than by taste.

Can reverse osmosis make bacterial well water safe to drink?
Not on its own. A membrane is a physical barrier that can be bypassed by a pinhole or fouled by biofilm, and it is not a disinfection method. Wells testing positive for coliform need ultraviolet treatment or chlorination upstream.
