For most US homes on a municipal supply, sink water is treated, monitored and safe to drink, and you can verify that rather than take it on faith. On a private well, nobody has checked the water unless you have. The honest answer to the question is therefore a method: identify your supply, read the evidence that exists for it, and test where no evidence exists.
On city water: read the report that already exists
Every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report describing what is in the water it delivers and how it compares to federal standards, and the EPA maintains a finder for locating yours. It arrives with the water bill or sits on the utility's website. Reading it tells you what was detected, at what levels, and whether anything violated a standard. That document, not the taste at your tap, is the evidence for whether your sink water meets drinking standards, and it is free.
On a well: the checking is your job
Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Around 15 percent of the US population, more than 23 million households, rely on private wells, and in a USGS study of 2,100 of them about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. If your sink runs on a well and you have no recent lab results, the truthful answer to the safety question is that nobody knows yet. An annual certified lab test covering bacteria and nitrates at minimum is the baseline.
Taste and smell are not the same as safety
The senses mislead in both directions. Chlorine taste, sulfur smell and mineral flavors are usually aesthetic problems rather than health hazards, while several contaminants of genuine concern, including lead, nitrates and PFAS, have no taste or odor at all. This is why the method is documents and lab results rather than a sniff test. Fixing a bad taste is a legitimate reason to filter; it is just a different project from establishing safety, and it should not be mistaken for one.
What to do with what you learn
If the report or lab result is clean, drink the water and retest or reread annually. If it flags an aesthetic problem, a point-of-use filter at the sink solves taste and odor cheaply. If it flags a health-related contaminant, match the treatment to the finding rather than buying a generic filter: different contaminants need different mechanisms, and the wrong cartridge gives false comfort.
