For most households on a community water system the answer is yes, because that water is regulated and monitored before it leaves the treatment plant. The honest qualification is that regulation covers the supply, not your building. Lead from plumbing, a private well outside the regulations, and contaminants only recently brought under a standard are the three reasons the answer is not automatic.
Start with the report your utility already publishes
Every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report, and the EPA maintains a finder to help you locate yours. It lists what was detected, at what levels, and whether anything exceeded a standard during the year. Reading it takes ten minutes and answers most questions people have about their tap. It is a system wide document, so it describes the water leaving the plant and moving through the mains, not the water arriving at your particular kitchen faucet.
Your own plumbing is the gap in the report
Lead almost never comes from the source. It dissolves out of lead service lines, older solder joints and brass fittings inside the building, which means the utility can be fully compliant while your first draw of the morning is not. Soft or acidic water and long stagnation make it worse. The only way to know is a first draw sample from your own tap, sent to a certified laboratory. Private wells are outside the system entirely
Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody tests them unless the owner does. That covers a lot of households: around fifteen percent of the US population, over 43 million people and more than 23 million households, rely on private wells. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. If your water comes from a well, an annual test is the whole safety system.
PFAS and standards that are still moving
PFAS are a recent example of a standard arriving after decades of use. The EPA's 2024 rule set maximum contaminant levels of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 parts per trillion for PFHxS, PFNA and GenX chemicals. Proposals published in May 2026 would keep the PFOA and PFOS limits with a compliance option extending to 2031 while rescinding the others. Utilities are working through monitoring and treatment against that framework, so recent reports may show results that older ones did not.
Taste and smell are separate questions
A chlorine smell means disinfectant residue doing its job, and carbon filtration removes it if you dislike it. An earthy or musty taste is usually harmless organic compounds from the source water. A metallic taste can point at plumbing and is worth investigating. A rotten egg smell on a well is hydrogen sulfide. None of these are safety verdicts on their own, but a sudden change in taste, smell or color in water that was previously fine is always worth a test.
