Zeolite is a family of aluminosilicate minerals with a porous crystal structure, and the word is used on the domestic market for two products that behave nothing alike. One is a filtration media that replaces sand and filters finer than sand can. The other is manganese treated zeolite, an oxidizing bed sold for iron and manganese removal. Buying the wrong one leaves the problem exactly where it was.
Zeolite as a filtration media
Used in place of filter sand, natural zeolite has a rough, highly porous grain that traps smaller particles than sand of the same size and does so at a lower weight per tank. It suits pool filters and whole house backwashing sediment tanks where the water carries fine silt that sand passes. It backwashes conventionally and lasts for years. What it is not is a chemical treatment: it takes out particles, so a clear water problem such as dissolved iron, hardness or a taste will run through it untouched.
Manganese treated zeolite for iron
This is a different product. The grains carry a manganese dioxide coating that oxidizes dissolved iron and manganese as the water contacts it, converting them to particles the bed then filters out. It is regenerated with potassium permanganate or, in continuously regenerated designs, by a small air or chlorine feed ahead of the tank. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, and that oxidized iron fouls softener resin, which is why an oxidizing bed belongs ahead of any softener.
Where each belongs in the line
Filtration zeolite goes where sand would go: first in the train, taking the mechanical load off everything after it. Manganese treated zeolite goes after gross sediment removal and before the softener, so oxidized iron is caught rather than being carried into resin. Neither belongs after a softener, and neither is a substitute for one. Before you buy either one
Test first, because the choice is decided by chemistry you cannot see. pH decides whether an oxidizing bed will work at all, and low pH is common on well water and needs correcting first. The iron form matters as well: dissolved iron passes a filter and stains later, while iron already oxidized in the well is a particle problem a plain media handles. Tannins and iron bacteria defeat both products and need their own treatment. A water analysis costs very little next to a tank of the wrong media.
