The water hardness range, band by band, and what each means

Hardness is reported on a scale with four named bands, and the same water can be described by two quite different numbers depending on which unit is used. Knowing where you sit and what that band implies is the whole of the decision about whether to treat, because the case for equipment strengthens sharply as you move up the scale.

The bands

The USGS classifies hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, with soft water at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above 180. Those thresholds are descriptive rather than regulatory: hardness is an aesthetic and practical matter rather than a health one, so nothing requires a utility to reduce it, and no band is unsafe. What changes across them is how quickly scale forms and how soap behaves.

The other unit, and why figures differ so much

Much of the water treatment trade reports hardness in grains per gallon instead, and those figures are far smaller, which causes constant confusion when comparing a utility report against a sizing chart or a product page. Always check which unit a number uses before acting on it, because entering the wrong one into a softener sizing calculation produces a wildly wrong answer and is the single most common error in this area.

What each band means in practice

In the soft band, nothing is deposited and soap lathers freely; some households find very soft water slightly aggressive to plumbing. Moderately hard is where most people do nothing at all: an occasional descale of the kettle and no more. In the hard band, scale and soap problems become continuous rather than occasional and treatment starts to pay. Above that, appliances and water heaters are being shortened measurably and the case for a softener is usually straightforward.

On a community supply the utility publishes hardness in its annual report at no cost, specific to your system rather than a regional average. On a private well a titration test kit gives a figure accurate enough to size equipment, and a laboratory gives one alongside iron, manganese and pH, which is worth doing together since they interact.
