Ion exchange is the whole-house answer
A softener passes water through a resin bed loaded with sodium or potassium ions. Calcium and magnesium bind to the resin, the sodium or potassium goes into the water, and the hardness is genuinely gone rather than merely rearranged. When the bed fills, the softener draws brine from its tank, strips the hardness off the resin and flushes it to drain. This is why softened water lathers, why spotting on glassware disappears, and why the scale in a kettle stops building. Point of use and small-scale options
Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink removes hardness from the water going to that faucet, which handles drinking, cooking, coffee machines and ice, but does nothing for the shower or the water heater. A countertop distiller does the same for a smaller volume with no plumbing at all. Both are sensible when the complaint is limited to taste and to appliances in the kitchen. Conditioners, magnets and what they really do
Template-assisted crystallization and similar salt-free conditioners do not reduce hardness: the calcium and magnesium leave the unit exactly as they entered. What they aim to do is convert dissolved hardness into microscopic crystals that stay suspended rather than bonding to pipe walls and heating elements. For a household that wants less scale but cannot discharge brine to a septic system or a restricted sewer, that can be the right compromise. Magnetic and electronic descalers make similar claims with far less consistent evidence behind them. Reducing hardness without equipment
Short of buying a system, there are still things worth doing. Lowering the water heater temperature slows scale deposition, since calcium carbonate comes out of solution faster as temperature rises. Descaling kettles, coffee machines and showerheads on a schedule with a mild acid keeps them working. Using more detergent, or a detergent formulated for hard water, restores cleaning performance that hardness is stealing. None of these change the water, but on moderately hard supplies they are often enough to make whole-house equipment unnecessary.

Does boiling water reduce hardness?

Will vinegar in the washing machine soften water?
