Salt water filter: the three things it can mean

Salt water filter is a phrase people arrive at from three different problems. Some mean a salt based water softener, the appliance that uses salt to recharge its resin. Some mean a filter that will take the salty taste out of their water. A few mean turning seawater into drinking water. The equipment for each is completely different, so the first job is working out which one you have.

Meaning one: the salt based softener

This is the common one. A softener holds a bed of resin beads that swap the calcium and magnesium in hard water for sodium, and periodically flushes the accumulated hardness away using a strong brine made from the salt you add to the tank. The salt never enters the treated water as salt: it is the recharging agent, and the household is drinking water with the hardness minerals replaced rather than water with salt added to it. If the reason you are searching is scale, spotting or poor lather, this is the appliance you are looking for and hardness is the number that sizes it.

Meaning two: water that already tastes salty

If your water tastes salty before any treatment, that is a different problem entirely and no softener will fix it. On a coastal or island well it usually points to saltwater intrusion into the aquifer. Inland it can come from road salt reaching shallow groundwater, from a natural sodium chloride formation, or from a nearby septic or industrial influence. It can also come from a softener that is regenerating badly and rinsing brine into the house, which is worth ruling out first since it is free to check. Real chloride in the source water is reduced by reverse osmosis, which is the practical household answer at a drinking tap.

Meaning three: desalination

Turning seawater or brackish water into drinking water uses reverse osmosis at high pressure, and it is a different class of equipment: high pressure pumps, specialized membranes and energy recovery. Small marine and off grid units exist, but this is not a household plumbing product and it is well outside what a domestic under sink system is built for. If a supply is genuinely brackish rather than merely hard, the sizing and the equipment must be specified for that concentration, because a standard drinking water membrane fed brackish water will foul quickly and produce very little.

Telling them apart before you spend anything

A laboratory test separates all three in one step, because it reports hardness, sodium and chloride together. High hardness with normal sodium and chloride means you want a softener. Elevated sodium and chloride, particularly with a taste you can detect, means intrusion or contamination and points to reverse osmosis at the tap plus a conversation about the well. Both elevated is possible and means two pieces of equipment in sequence. Guessing from taste alone is unreliable because sodium is detectable at concentrations that vary a lot between people, so the test is the cheap part of this decision.

If a softener is the answer, what to check next

Size it on your measured hardness and the number of people in the house, since an undersized unit regenerates constantly and an oversized one wastes salt sitting idle. Check the valve type and whether it meters water use or simply runs on a clock, because metered valves regenerate on demand and use noticeably less salt. Decide where the drain line will go, which is the part of the install most often improvised, and confirm the unit will fit near the supply entry before the softened water reaches the water heater.
