When a homeowner searches for a salt water filter system, they almost always mean a salt based water softener: a tank of resin that uses salt to regenerate itself. Household equipment for treating actual seawater is a different world of engineering and is not what is sold for a basement. The salt in a softener never becomes the point of the treatment, it is the tool that resets the resin.
Where the salt actually goes
A softener does not filter salt out of water and does not add salt as a treatment. Resin beads hold sodium ions and exchange them for the calcium and magnesium in your supply. When the beads are full of hardness, the system draws brine from the salt tank, floods the resin, strips the hardness off and sends it to the drain along with the used brine. The softened water leaving the tank carries a small amount of sodium in place of the hardness it lost.
Salt type and how much you handle
Softener salt comes as pellets, crystals, blocks and rock salt, and the practical differences are purity and how prone each is to bridging into a crust above the water in the brine tank. Higher purity salt leaves less insoluble residue in the tank to clean out. Potassium chloride is the usual substitute where sodium is a concern, works the same way and costs more. Vendors publish capacity steps for each softener, and larger capacity means fewer regenerations and less salt handling for you.
What a salt based system does and does not filter
This is the confusion behind the search term. Ion exchange removes hardness and, within limits, a little dissolved iron and manganese. It does not remove chlorine, sediment, bacteria, lead, nitrate, PFAS or taste compounds. If your complaint is scale, spotting and soap performance, a softener is the answer. If it is taste, smell or a contaminant, you need a filter as well, usually carbon on the main line or a membrane at the drinking tap.
Salt free systems and where they genuinely help
Salt free conditioners use template assisted crystallization to convert dissolved hardness into microscopic crystals that stay suspended instead of plating out on hot surfaces. There is no salt, no brine tank and no drain line, which suits homes with no drain near the entry point and areas that restrict brine discharge. They reduce scale rather than removing hardness, so soap performance and the soft water feel do not change. That is a genuine trade, not a defect, and it decides which product suits you.
Installation and the drain requirement
A salt based system needs three things at the install point: a drain that can take the regeneration flow with a proper air gap, an outlet for the control valve, and enough room to lift bags of salt into the brine tank without fighting the water heater. Some jurisdictions restrict brine discharge to septic systems or to sewer, so check locally before buying. Questions people ask about salt water filter system
Does a water softener make my water salty?
No. The sodium added in exchange for hardness is small and is not detectable as a salty taste, though people on strict sodium restriction sometimes choose potassium chloride or add a reverse osmosis tap.
Can a home system filter seawater?
Not practically. Desalination needs high pressure membranes and energy well beyond household equipment, and nothing sold as a residential softener or filter does it.
How much salt will I use?
It depends on your hardness, your water use and how efficiently the valve brines. A metered on demand softener uses less than a timer model because it regenerates only when the resin is actually exhausted.
Is a salt free system a real softener?
It is a conditioner rather than a softener. It reduces scale formation without removing calcium and magnesium, so hardness measured at the tap is unchanged and soap behaves as it did before.
