What de-ionized water is good for and what it is not

De-ionized water has had its dissolved mineral ions removed by passing it through ion exchange resins. What comes out has extremely low conductivity and is very pure by that measure, and it is not pure in every sense, because ion exchange only removes things that carry a charge. That single fact explains every appropriate use and every inappropriate one.

How it is produced

Two resins do the work. A cation resin exchanges positive ions, calcium, magnesium and sodium among them, for hydrogen. An anion resin exchanges negative ions, chloride, sulfate and bicarbonate, for hydroxide. The hydrogen and hydroxide released combine to form more water. Mixed bed cartridges combine both for a higher purity finish. The resins are consumed in proportion to what was dissolved in the feed, so hard water exhausts a cartridge quickly and softening the feed first extends its life considerably.

What it removes and what it leaves

Dissolved salts and mineral ions go, essentially completely. What stays is anything uncharged: dissolved organic compounds, particulates and, importantly, bacteria and viruses. So water can read almost zero on a conductivity meter and still be microbiologically unsuitable, which is why de-ionized water is not sold or handled as a drinking water product in the way distilled water is. Resin beds that sit wet and unused are themselves a habitat for growth.

Where it is genuinely used

Spot free rinsing is the most visible domestic use: car detailing and window cleaning, where nothing dissolved remains to leave a mark as the water dries. Laboratory work, where ionic contamination would interfere with results. Battery topping up, steam raising and cooling systems, where minerals would scale. Cosmetic and pharmaceutical manufacture. In each case the requirement is the absence of ions specifically, rather than general purity, which is exactly what the process delivers.

Knowing when the resin is spent

Exhaustion gives no visible sign at all, so a conductivity or TDS meter is not optional if the output matters: readings climb as the bed nears the end and the water stops doing its job before anyone notices. Some cartridges use a color changing indicator resin instead. On hard water the cost per volume is high enough that the economics decide most purchases, and the USGS classes water above 180 mg/L as calcium carbonate as very hard, which exhausts a cartridge fast.
