Dealing with silt in well water that a coarse filter passes

Silt is the awkward middle of well sediment: too fine for a centrifugal separator to throw out reliably, fine enough to blind a tight cartridge in weeks, and just visible enough to make water look cloudy and unappealing. It behaves quite differently from sand, and treating it as though it were sand is why so many well filtration setups underperform.

Why silt is different from sand

Separation by centrifugal force works on density and size together, so it throws out sand efficiently and progressively less as particles get finer. Silt and clay particles are small and light enough to stay in suspension through a separator, and they are also what blinds a fine cartridge fastest, because a great many tiny particles pack into the media and shut it down. A well can therefore appear to have its sediment handled by a separator and still deliver cloudy water.

Diagnosing it properly

Fill a clear glass and leave it standing. Silt settles to the bottom over hours as a fine layer, and the water above clears. Water that clears from the top downwards was carrying air, not silt, and that is a pressure tank or plumbing matter. Water that stays uniformly colored for hours is carrying something dissolved: iron, manganese or tannins. Only the first of those is a filtration problem, and mistaking one for another is the most common wasted purchase on a well.

What actually removes it

A backwashing media tank is the workhorse answer, since the bed traps fine particles across its depth and then cleans itself to drain rather than being consumed. Zeolite media filters finer than sand at lower weight and suits silt specifically. Multi media beds layer densities to catch a wider size range. After that, a cartridge stage polishes what the bed passes, staged coarse then fine so the cheap element takes the load. On very fine clay, coagulation ahead of filtration is sometimes required.

Then look at the well itself

Persistent silt often means the well is drawing from a formation that produces it, or that the pump is set low enough to disturb settled material. Over pumping pulls fines into the borehole that a gentler draw would leave. The EPA notes private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so an assessment is the owner's to commission, and it is worth doing before committing to a treatment train.
