Remineralizing cartridges versus electric ionizers
The two products sold under this heading work differently. A remineralizing cartridge is a passive bed of mineral media, commonly calcium and magnesium compounds, that the water dissolves a little of as it passes, which raises pH and adds mineral content. An electric ionizer uses charged plates to split the incoming stream into an alkaline fraction and an acidic one, dispensing the first and draining the second. The USGS defines water hardness as the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium a supply carries, which is exactly what a remineralizing stage is adding back. And does it need power and a drain, because ionizers need both and that decides where the unit can live.
