Building a lake water filter system that produces safe water

A house drawing from a lake is treating surface water, and surface water is a different problem from a well. It is exposed to run off, wildlife, seasonal algae and everything that enters the catchment, its quality changes through the year rather than staying stable, and it carries organisms that groundwater usually does not. The treatment train reflects all three.

Start at the intake

The cheapest improvement happens before any filter. Draw from well below the surface and well above the bottom, so you are taking neither the floating layer nor the settled sediment, and use a foot valve with a screen to keep debris and fish out of the line. Where the season allows, an intake that can be adjusted for depth is worth having, because the best water is at different depths at different times of year. Everything the intake excludes is load the filters never have to carry.

Sediment and turbidity, in stages

Surface water carries far more suspended material than a well, and it varies: a storm can change turbidity within hours. Stage the filtration coarse to fine, typically a spin down or coarse cartridge first, then a backwashing media filter for continuous load, then finer cartridges to polish. Sizing generously here matters, because a train that copes in July and blinds in November is a train that will be bypassed in frustration. Turbidity also has to come down for the disinfection stage to work at all.

Organics, colour and taste

Lakes carry dissolved organic material from vegetation, which gives colour, taste and odour, feeds growth in storage, and absorbs ultraviolet light. Activated carbon addresses taste and odour and removes much of the organic load; heavier colour may need anion exchange or a membrane. This stage is not cosmetic on a surface supply: dissolved organics are what make ultraviolet transmittance poor even when water looks clear, so treating them is part of making disinfection reliable.

Disinfection is not optional here

Surface water should be assumed to carry bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts. Ultraviolet is the common choice once the water is genuinely clear, sized on peak flow with an intensity sensor. Chlorination with a contact tank is used where the water is difficult or where a residual is wanted through storage. The EPA notes private supplies are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so testing after commissioning and on a seasonal schedule is what proves the train works.
