A water filter for wells is not optional equipment the way it is on city water: with a well, nobody upstream is treating anything. Why wells need their own filter strategy

That placement is what protects the expensive downstream equipment: sediment stays out of valves and cartridges, iron stays off the fixtures and laundry, and odor never reaches the showers. Choosing media for well problems

Well complaints map onto filter media cleanly. Grit and cloudiness call for sediment media or pleated cartridges, rated by micron size. Orange staining and metallic taste call for oxidizing media that precipitates dissolved iron and manganese so the bed can catch them. Rotten egg smell responds to the same oxidizing approach. Bad taste or chemical odor calls for catalytic carbon. Acidic water that blue-greens copper fittings calls for calcite neutralizing media. What none of these media do is disinfect: a positive bacteria result needs ultraviolet or chlorination added after the filtration, not a different cartridge.
