Activated carbon is the most widely used filtration medium in the home and the most widely misunderstood. It does not strain contaminants out the way a sediment filter does. It adsorbs them: molecules stick to an enormous internal surface area as water passes through, which means the time water spends in contact with the media matters more than the size of the housing.
Adsorption, contact time and why size matters
A gram of activated carbon carries an internal surface area measured in hundreds of square meters, folded into a maze of pores. Organic molecules, chlorine and the compounds behind most taste and odor complaints attach to that surface as water flows past. The catch is that attachment takes time. Push water through too fast, or through too little media, and much of it leaves before anything has stuck. That is why an undersized filter on a whole house line disappoints while the same media in a slow point of use cartridge performs, and why flow rate ratings deserve as much attention as micron ratings.
Granular carbon against carbon block
Granular activated carbon is loose media in a bed or cartridge. Water finds the easiest route through it, so it is prone to channelling, but it offers low pressure drop and suits whole house duty where flow matters. A carbon block is the same material compressed with a binder into a solid wall. Water has to pass through the structure, so contact is more even and the block also acts as a mechanical filter down to a fine particle size, which is how a block can be certified for cysts and particulate lead where loose granules cannot. Blocks cost more and restrict flow more.
What carbon does not do
Carbon does not soften water: hardness minerals pass through untouched and a carbon filter fitted in the hope of curing scale will not. It does not remove dissolved iron or manganese in any useful quantity, does not reduce nitrate, and does not disinfect, although a block rated for cysts will strain some organisms out mechanically. Total dissolved solids come out roughly as they went in. Those jobs belong to ion exchange, oxidizing filters, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet, and a good carbon stage is usually working alongside one of them rather than instead of it.
Exhaustion is invisible, so change on schedule
A spent carbon filter looks identical to a fresh one and keeps passing water at the same rate. There is no color change, no pressure warning and often no taste warning until well past the point where it stopped working. Worse, media held at capacity in a warm, wet, nutrient rich cartridge is a comfortable place for bacteria to grow. Set the interval from the manufacturer's rated volume and your household's real use, not from appearances, and write the date on the housing. Questions people ask about activated carbon water filters
Do activated carbon filters remove hardness?
No. Calcium and magnesium pass straight through carbon. Removing hardness requires ion exchange in a softener or a reverse osmosis membrane.
Is a carbon block better than granular carbon?
For point of use it usually is, because contact is more even and the block filters mechanically as well. Granular media suits whole house duty where flow rate matters more.
Can a carbon filter make water worse if left too long?
It can. Once the media is exhausted it stops adsorbing, and a warm wet cartridge holding trapped organics is a place where bacteria will grow.
Does carbon remove chlorine and chloramine equally?
No. Chlorine comes out readily, while chloramine is far more stubborn and needs catalytic carbon with much longer contact time to be reduced meaningfully.
