Activated carbon filters: what they remove and what they cannot

Activated carbon filters remove contaminants by adsorption: the carbon's enormous internal surface grabs and holds chlorine, taste and odor compounds, and many organic chemicals as water passes through. They are the workhorse of residential filtration, from pitcher cartridges to whole-house tanks. Knowing what carbon does, and just as importantly what it does not do, is the difference between fixing your water and merely buying filters.

How adsorption actually works

Activated carbon is charcoal processed to be riddled with microscopic pores, giving a single cartridge an internal surface area measured in football fields' worth of adsorption sites. Organic molecules and chlorine stick to those surfaces chemically and physically as water flows past. The process depends on contact time: water moving too fast through too small a filter leaves before the carbon can grab everything, which is why bigger beds and slower flow always outperform a tiny cartridge asked to do the same job.

GAC, carbon block and catalytic carbon

Granular activated carbon (GAC) is loose media: high flow, good chlorine and odor pickup, but water can channel around the grains. Carbon block is powdered carbon fused into a solid cylinder: contact is forced and pore size can be tight enough to strain sediment and reduce lead or cysts when the block is certified for it, at the cost of more flow restriction. Catalytic carbon is surface-modified to break down chloramine and hydrogen sulfide, jobs where standard carbon is slow and inefficient. What carbon cannot remove, and replacement discipline

Carbon barely touches dissolved minerals, salts, nitrates, fluoride or hardness: those need reverse osmosis or ion exchange. It also holds no residual disinfectant, so it does not make microbially unsafe water safe. Do activated carbon filters remove bacteria or viruses?

No. Carbon adsorbs chemicals, not microorganisms, and a used carbon bed can even harbor bacteria. Microbial safety needs UV, chlorination or a certified purification membrane.

What is the difference between carbon block and GAC filters?

GAC is loose granules with high flow but possible channeling; carbon block is fused carbon that forces full contact and can also strain fine particles. Block generally removes more per pass at lower flow.

How do I know when a carbon filter is used up?

You often cannot tell by taste until well after breakthrough, so replace on the maker's schedule. A return of chlorine taste or odor means the filter was exhausted some time ago.
