RO booster pump: fixing low pressure on a reverse osmosis system

An RO booster pump raises the feed pressure going into a reverse osmosis membrane so the system produces properly. Membranes are rated at a test pressure most homes do not reach, and where household pressure is low the result is a system that fills its tank slowly and sends more water to drain than it should.

When low pressure is genuinely the problem

The symptoms are a tank that takes far longer to fill than the specification suggests, a faucet that gives a short burst and fades, and poor rejection in a system whose cartridges are all fresh. Before buying a pump, check the obvious: a clogged sediment cartridge, a half-closed feed valve, a kinked tube, a failing bladder charge in the tank. Measure the feed pressure at the system with a gauge, not from the shower upstairs, since a partly closed stop valve under the sink is a common culprit.

How a booster pump is installed

The pump goes on the feed line after the sediment and carbon prefilters and before the membrane housing, so it is pushing clean water. It needs an outlet, and it works with a pressure switch that cuts the pump when the storage tank reaches its shutoff point, plus in most kits a low-pressure switch that protects the pump from running dry if the supply is interrupted. Mount it on its rubber isolators against a solid surface, since these pumps hum and the cabinet will amplify it.

Booster pump against permeate pump

A permeate pump is a different device: it needs no electricity, using the energy of the drain stream to reduce back-pressure from the storage tank so the membrane works more effectively and wastes less water. It helps where pressure is adequate but tank back-pressure is holding production down. A booster pump is the answer where the incoming pressure itself is genuinely low. They solve related problems by different means, and on some systems both are fitted.

What a pump will not fix

A booster pump will not rescue a fouled or chlorine-damaged membrane, and pushing harder on a scaled membrane simply hastens its end. It will not compensate for exhausted prefilters. It will not fix a tank that has lost its air charge, since that is a delivery problem rather than a production one. Diagnose first, and if the incoming water is hard or iron-bearing, deal with the pretreatment, because a pump forcing dirty water into a membrane is an expensive way to shorten its life.
