A reverse osmosis membrane is pressure driven: the incoming pressure has to overcome the osmotic pressure of the dissolved solids before a single drop crosses. On a weak supply the system limps, the tank fills slowly, and far more water goes to drain than should. A booster pump kit fixes exactly that fault and nothing else.
Diagnose the pressure before you buy the pump
Fit an inexpensive gauge on the feed line and read it while the system is producing, not while everything is idle. Static pressure can look healthy and still collapse under demand, particularly on a well with a tired pressure switch setting or on the top floor of a tall house. Note the reading, then check the membrane specification sheet for its minimum working pressure. If you are comfortably above it and still getting a trickle, the problem is a blinded prefilter, a fouled membrane, a kinked line or a tank with no air charge, and a pump will only mask it.
What is in the kit and how it goes together
A typical kit has a diaphragm pump, a transformer, a low pressure switch on the inlet, a high pressure shutoff switch after the membrane, a bracket and the tubing to plumb it in. The pump sits after the sediment and carbon prefilters so it never handles raw grit. The low pressure switch stops it running dry if the supply is shut off; the high pressure switch cuts it when the storage tank is full. Wire it so both switches must be satisfied for the pump to run, and check every push-fit joint under pressure before you close the cabinet.
What improves, and what does not
With correct pressure the tank fills faster, the tank fills fuller, more of the feed becomes permeate and less goes to drain, and rejection improves because the membrane is working in its designed range. What does not change is the contaminant list the membrane addresses, the taste of a stale carbon post-filter, or a cartridge schedule you have been ignoring. Reverse osmosis under-sink systems are sold with published pressure ranges, and a pump is a way of meeting that range, not of exceeding the system's rating.
Alternatives worth considering first
If the whole house is soft on pressure, a booster or a correctly adjusted well pressure switch serving the entire home is a better buy than a pump serving one tap. If the issue is only the wait for a glass of water, a larger storage tank costs less and makes no noise. Indirectly. Running the membrane inside its designed pressure range improves rejection and reduces the share sent to drain, but it does not change what the membrane can remove.
