An arsenic filter for well water is specified from a water analysis, not from a catalog. Arsenic in groundwater is geologic, invisible and tasteless, and the form it takes underground is usually the harder one to remove. Getting the specification right means testing for speciation and for the ions that compete with arsenic for space on the media.

Wells are unmonitored, and geology is local

Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the EPA estimates around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, depends on them. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Arsenic comes from the rock the aquifer sits in, which means it can vary between neighboring properties on the same road and it can change as the water table moves. Test when you buy the property, then periodically, and always when a neighbor reports a result.

Speciation decides whether the system works

Ask the laboratory to report arsenic speciation, not just total arsenic. Arsenate carries a charge that adsorptive media capture readily. Arsenite is uncharged at typical groundwater pH, and it passes through the same media and through membranes with far less effect. Oxygen-poor groundwater, which describes most wells, tends to carry the harder form. If the speciation shows it, or if you cannot get the test, the system needs a pre-oxidation step ahead of the media so the arsenite is converted before it reaches the bed. Systems that fail in the field are usually correct equipment installed without that step.

Sizing the media vessel

Point-of-entry arsenic removal is an adsorptive media vessel: iron-based granules or activated alumina in a tank, sized on two things at once. The vessel has to be tall enough to give the water the contact time the media needs at your peak flow, and it has to hold enough media that the bed volume treated between change-outs is a sensible interval rather than a monthly chore. The media is disposed of and replaced rather than regenerated, so ask the vendor for the projected bed life at your measured arsenic concentration and water chemistry, in writing, before you buy.

What competes with arsenic on the bed

Adsorptive capacity is not a fixed number; it depends on what else is in the water. Silica, phosphate and sulfate occupy the same sites and cut bed life. High pH reduces capacity sharply on most media, so a neutralizing filter installed upstream for copper protection can quietly halve the life of the arsenic vessel and needs to be considered together with it. Point of use as the budget path

Arsenic matters through what you drink and cook with rather than through bathing, so an under-sink reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink is a legitimate answer for many households, at a fraction of the cost of a point-of-entry vessel. The catch is discipline: every drinking source in the house has to be that one faucet, which means the bathroom tap, the fridge dispenser and the outdoor spigot are all off the list unless they are plumbed to treated water.
