Arsenic water filter choices: what actually removes arsenic and what does not

An arsenic water filter has to use one of the few technologies that genuinely capture arsenic: reverse osmosis at the tap, specialty adsorptive media at the point of entry, or distillation. Ordinary carbon filters and pitcher jugs are not reliable arsenic treatments, and because arsenic has no taste, smell or color, the whole decision starts and ends with lab testing.

How arsenic gets into household water

Arsenic occurs naturally in rock and soil, and it dissolves into groundwater as water moves through arsenic-bearing geology, which is why the problem concentrates in wells in particular regions rather than appearing randomly. Legacy pesticides and industrial activity add localized sources. Private wells carry the exposure risk longest because nobody is checking them: the EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so detection depends entirely on the owner ordering the right lab test. Utilities, by contrast, must treat arsenic before it reaches city taps.

What actually removes arsenic

Reverse osmosis is the workhorse for drinking water: the membrane rejects dissolved arsenic along with other solids, and an under-sink unit protects the tap the household drinks and cooks from. Specialty adsorptive media, typically iron-oxide based, capture arsenic across the whole house and suit wells where every tap should be covered. Distillation works but is slow and energy-hungry. One critical detail: arsenic comes in two forms, and the harder-to-catch form is usually converted by pre-oxidation, commonly chlorination, before treatment, which is why serious arsenic systems are designed from a speciation test rather than bought off a shelf.

What does not work, despite the packaging

Standard activated carbon, the media inside most pitchers, faucet mounts and fridge filters, has poor and unreliable arsenic capture, and a filter is only an arsenic filter if it is certified for arsenic reduction specifically. Softeners do not remove it. Boiling is actively counterproductive: water evaporates, arsenic does not, so concentrations rise. Sediment filters and UV systems address entirely different problems. The pattern to avoid is buying general-purpose filtration and assuming arsenic is included; with this contaminant, only the named certification counts.

Test first, treat, then retest

A certified lab test establishes the level and, ideally, the arsenic species, which together determine whether point-of-use RO suffices or whole-house media is warranted.
