In a salt softener water is never actually treated with salt. The salt never touches the water you drink; it makes brine, and the brine recharges the resin bed that does the softening. Understanding that one separation explains most of what confuses owners about salt type, salt consumption, salty tasting water and why the brine tank is sometimes bone dry and sometimes half full.
The salt recharges the resin, it does not soften the water
Softening happens in the resin tank. Each bead holds sodium ions loosely and grabs calcium and magnesium in preference as water passes, releasing the sodium. Eventually every site on every bead is occupied by hardness and the bed stops working. That is when the brine tank matters: a strong salt solution is drawn through the bed, and the sheer concentration of sodium forces the hardness back off the beads and out to drain. Then the bed is rinsed and put back into service. So the salt buys you resin capacity, over and over. It is a consumable that resets the machine, not an ingredient in your water.
Which salt to buy
Evaporated salt pellets are the purest common option and leave the least insoluble residue in the tank, which is why they are the default recommendation for softeners with fine resin or where the owner does not want to clean out the tank often. Solar salt crystals are cheaper and perfectly serviceable in most units. Rock salt is the cheapest and the dirtiest, carrying insolubles that settle as sludge in the bottom of the brine tank and can find their way into the valve. Potassium chloride substitutes for sodium chloride where a household wants to avoid adding sodium, works the same way chemically, and needs the valve dosing adjusted because it is less efficient per pound.
How much a house gets through, and what drives it
Salt use is a product of three things: how hard the incoming water is, how much water the household uses, and how efficiently the valve is programmed. A metered valve that regenerates on volume used, rather than a timer that fires every few days regardless, cuts consumption substantially because it stops recharging a bed that is not exhausted. Iron in the supply raises salt use as well, since the same cycle has to carry iron off the resin. Bridging, mushing and salty tasting water
Two brine tank faults account for most calls. A salt bridge is a hard crust that spans the tank with an empty cavity beneath it, so the tank looks full while the softener has been regenerating with plain water and delivering hard water for weeks. Break it with a broom handle and check that the tank is not in a damp, warm corner. Mushing is the opposite: fine salt recrystallizes into a sludge at the base that blocks the brine draw. That one needs the tank emptied and washed. If the water itself tastes salty, the problem is a regeneration that failed to rinse, usually a stuck drain line, a plugged injector or a drain line pushed uphill too far.
Iron, resin and the limits of a salt softener
A softener can carry some iron, but only within limits. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, and that softeners can remove dissolved iron when pH is above 6.7, hardness is between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L. Outside that window, or where the iron has already oxidized into visible orange particles, the iron fouls the resin instead of being exchanged. The fix is an iron filter ahead of the softener, plus a periodic resin cleaner, not more salt.
Questions people ask about salt softener water
Does salt from a softener end up in my drinking water?
Not as salt. The exchange releases a small amount of sodium in place of the hardness minerals, and the brine itself goes to the drain, not to your taps.
Can I mix salt types in the same brine tank?
Better not to. Mixing pellets with crystals or with potassium encourages bridging, and potassium needs a different dose setting on the valve.
How full should I keep the brine tank?
Keep salt above the water line and no more than about two thirds full. Overfilling a tall tank is the main cause of salt bridges forming.
Why is my softener using salt but not softening?
Usually a salt bridge, a fouled resin bed or a valve stuck in bypass. Check for a hollow crust in the tank first, since that costs nothing to rule out.
