Material accumulates on the outer surface and flow slows, and the remedy is to scrub the outside gently with a soft brush or pad under running water, removing a thin layer of ceramic along with the dirt. That can be repeated many times, which is why a ceramic outlasts a cartridge on dirty water. It also means the element thins with each clean, and manufacturers supply a gauge or a minimum diameter at which it should be retired.

Where the format earns its place

Gravity units for camping, emergency preparedness and homes without a usable tap connection are the obvious cases, since a ceramic works with no pressure and no power. Countertop gravity systems for households that do not want to plumb anything are the domestic version. And ceramics are used as a first stage where water carries a heavy load and a disposable cartridge would be consumed quickly. Where the water is a clean municipal supply and the concern is taste, a carbon cartridge is simpler and flows far better.

Limits worth being clear about

Flow is slow, which is inherent to fine pores and is the main daily compromise. Ceramics do not soften water, do not remove dissolved salts or nitrate, and are not a virus barrier on their own. They are brittle, and a dropped element that looks intact may be cracked, which lets water bypass the pores entirely.
