Ceramic filtration uses a porous fired element with pore sizes small enough to retain bacteria and protozoan cysts mechanically. Its defining property is that the surface can be cleaned and the element reused many times, which makes it the standard choice for gravity systems, emergency supplies and places where replacement cartridges are not easily obtained.
How fine the pores actually are
Ceramic elements are made with pore structures fine enough to retain bacteria and cysts by size exclusion alone, without any chemical process, which is why they carry microbiological claims that carbon and sediment cartridges cannot. Viruses are considerably smaller and are not reliably retained by ceramic alone, which is why elements intended for doubtful sources combine the ceramic shell with a carbon core and sometimes a silver treatment to inhibit growth in the pores.
The cleaning that defines it
Because retention happens at the surface rather than in depth, the accumulated material sits as a visible layer that can be brushed or scoured off under running water, exposing fresh ceramic and restoring the flow rate. An element can be cleaned many times over a long life. Each cleaning removes a small amount of material, so elements are supplied with a gauge or a marked diameter to show when enough has been taken off that the element should be retired.
What it does not do
Nothing dissolved. Hardness, dissolved iron, nitrate, arsenic, fluoride, tannins and total dissolved solids all pass through, and chlorine passes unless there is a carbon core. Flow rate is modest, which is why these are common in gravity fed countertop units and rare on pressurized whole house feeds. And a ceramic element is brittle: a hairline crack from being dropped or from freezing lets water bypass the pore structure entirely while the unit looks perfectly normal.
Where it earns its place
Gravity countertop systems needing no plumbing and no power. Emergency and off grid supplies where cartridge availability cannot be relied on. Travel and expedition use. And as a polishing stage on a well where cyst reduction is wanted without a membrane. It is not a substitute for ultraviolet or chlorination where viruses are a concern, and not a substitute for reverse osmosis where the problem is dissolved.
